Kansas 811 is called before we break ground on every job, no exceptions. It takes a couple of days, which is why a start date is never tomorrow.
Johnson County sits on heavy clay. It swells when it takes on water and shrinks when it dries, so the ground under your patio moves all year whether or not anything is built on it.
Then winter crosses freezing and thaws again, dozens of times. Water in a badly drained base expands every time it freezes — so a patio that looked perfect in October is heaved by March. None of it is fixable from the top.

Sand screeded, field laid, edges cut on a wet saw, joints locked, site cleaned, then we walk it together.
We cannot tell you over the phone without guessing, and a guess usually turns into a change order later. What moves the price: the size, how far material has to be wheeled from the driveway, how much dirt leaves the property, whether there is a grade change needing steps, the paver you pick, and whether something has to come out first.
You get a fixed written price after we have stood in your yard. If it is over budget we will tell you what to trim — usually size or paver choice. Not base depth.
A patio at ground level usually does not. Retaining walls past about four feet, anything structural, and work near an easement usually do — and the rules vary city to city around here. We check it for your address before the proposal. Finding out mid-job is the version that actually costs you.
Sometimes it is not. When it is, it is almost always what is underneath. Compare bids on four things: how deep they are digging, how thick the base is, whether fabric is listed at all, and whether they describe compacting in layers. If a proposal does not mention any of it, that is not a cheaper patio — it is a different patio.
Sometimes. A settled section can occasionally be pulled up, re-based and reset with your existing pavers. If the base was never right to begin with, resetting the top just buys a couple of years — and we will tell you which one you have got.
Usually into November. Pavers are not concrete — there is no cure time — so cold is a comfort problem more than a quality one. Frozen ground is the real stop, and that tends to show up in December.
